We are going to the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Here you visit a real batik factory and the gem museum. After lunch we make a trip through the nearby bird sanctuary where besides the great variety of winged animals there are also many monkeys to admireNow to the temple of the tooth This is the most important temple of Sri Lanka and certainly one of the most important temples for Buddhism. In this temple the left canine tooth of Buddha is being kept. You can see a traditional dancing show and be part of the temple festival.
Day 4 Kandy – Sigiriya
We climb the lion rock, a long-deceased volcano of about 180 meters high. In the 5th century it was a royal complex with palace on top of the rock. On our way up we pass the various gardens, the mirror wall and the murals of the virgins. At the top you can see the ruins of the royal palace and you will be spoiled with beautiful panoramic views.
Day 5 Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa was, after Anuradhapura, the second capital of the former Ceylon, which is now Sri Lanka. Admire the monuments and the royal citadel. The latter contains the remains of the royal palace and its audience hall. Now there are no more people living in this city, only the monkeys have made it their habitat. The largest part of the Disney movie ‘Monkey Kingdom’ was recorded here. We take a look at the colossal granite Buddha’s and one of the most beautiful Buddhist shrines from around 1200 AD.
Day 6 Polonnaruwa – Wasgamuwa national park
The nearly 4,000-acre sanctuary of Wasgamuwa is known for its large number of elephants and leopards. You can also see many other animals such as water buffalo, deer and sloth bears. Near the lakes you will find many species of birds, lizards and crocodiles. Of course we will see monkeys as well!
Day 7 Wasgamuwa – Ella
In Ella you have the most magnificent views. We make a stop at a stunning waterfall where you can bath in the natural swimming pool. We visit the spice garden and learn about the growing and the usage of local herbs in the kitchen as well as medicinally. We learn to prepare real Sri Lankan curries in a cooking workshop and we will taste our own creations at dinner.
Day 8 Ella – Nuwara Eliya
After breakfast we take the train to Nuwara Eliya. This train ride is by many people seen as a highlight of their trip. It takes you through the beautiful mountain area, the tea plantations, over old wooden bridges and high mountain railway stations. Alternately you can see rugged mountains, tea plantations and waterfalls. The views are breath taking! We visit a tea factory and tea plantation where we taste a cup of the finest tea.
Day 9 Nuwara Eliya – Horton Plains
Horton Plains National Park is a nature reserve and is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vast grassland landscapes alternate with beautiful cloud forests and you can spot many animals. Here we visit “the end of the world”; an abyss of more than one kilometre with a great view and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka.
Day 10 Horton Plains – Kitulgala
We visit a small village in the middle of the tropical rainforest. It is a great place to spot birds and monkeys. Kitulgala is best known for the movie “Bridge on the River Kwai”. The film is set in Thailand, but is for the most part filmed in this location on the Kelani River. Optionally, you can search for adventure with the main activity in Kitulgala: wild water rafting or you can visit the historic caves where the 16,000 year old remains of the Balangoda man have been found.
Day 11 Kitulgala – Colombo
Today is the last day of our tour and we go back to Colombo. Depending on your departure time and your preferences you can do some sightseeing or souvenir shopping on our last day. Here you can catch a flight home or you can chose to extend your holiday at one of the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka or the Maldives.
The end of a beautiful experience and a memorable tour!
