Day 1 Colombo Airport – Hotel
We welcome you and arrange the transfer to your hotel after arrival at the airport in Colombo (CMB). Here we review our program with you and answer all of your questions regarding the tour. The rest of the day is to relax, so you can recover after your flight. Depending on your arrival time and your preferences, you can skip the relaxing time and start with your tour immediately by exploring Colombo for example!
Day 2 Colombo – Kitulgala
After a good night’s sleep we start our day with a peek at the historical caves. Here are the 16,000 years old remains of the Balangoda man. The caves are in a ledge at the top of a steep path which is only accessible on foot. From the ridge you have a wonderful view over the rainforest. Then we experience our first adventure on the water; we go whitewater rafting in the hill country of Sri Lanka. The wild water gives us a huge thrill but is still safe enough for children and people who can’t swim very well. Afterwards there is enough time for you to refresh yourself, enjoy a delicious Sri Lankan dinner and a few hours of sleep because soon our nightly adventure will follow!
Day 3 Adam’s Peak
Just after midnight we put on our walking shoes and with our cameras ready, we begin our ascent of the Adam’s Peak massive rock (optional). This rock is no less than 2300 meters high and there are about 6,500 steps to climb. The path is lit with lanterns, drinks and fruits are being sold along the way and there are enough spots to take a rest. It’s a long way to the top, but you get rewarded with a stunning view; you can see the most breath taking sunrise ever. Adam’s Peak is a place of pilgrimage for many religions. Every Sri Lankan is deemed to make this trip at least once in his life. The rest of the day is to rest and cool off in the hotel pool.
Day 4 Horton Plains and the “worlds end”
Today we go to Horton Plains; a nature reserve which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vast grassland landscapes alternate with beautiful cloud forests and you can spot many animals. So we arrive at “worlds end”. Here the mountain ends in a deep abyss of more than one kilometre. It offers fantastic views of the area.
Day 5 Nuwara Eliya – Ella
After breakfast we will visit the tea plantations and we take the most magnificent journey by train; we will pass mountains, breath taking landscapes and cascading waterfalls on our way to Ella. Here we make a stop to bath in the natural swimming pool of the waterfall and we end our day with a cooking class in a real spice garden where we learn all about cultivating herbs and prepare the real Sri Lankan curries. These self-made creations are then – of course – our tasty supper.
Day 6 Udawalawe NP – Elephants shelter – Rekawa
This day is entirely devoted to the big giants. Early in the morning we go on a jeep safari in the Udawalawe national park. This park is known for its large population of wild elephants, about 600 of these huge animals walk around here. Undoubtedly we will also encounter monkeys, monitor lizards, crocodiles and buffalo. We will have a real Sri Lankan lunch in one of the local taverns. Next on our program is a shelter where they take in injured elephants to get stronger. Even small orphans are cared for until they are old enough to take care of themselves in the wild. After dinner it’s time for our nocturnal adventure with the sea turtles! We take you there by the local three-wheeler called tuktuk. We learn about the animals in the information centre and then we move to the protected beach of Rekawa where we wait under the stars for a turtle to come ashore, dig her nest and lay her eggs. With some luck you may even see a nest hatch!
Day 7 Canoeing on the lagoon – Mirissa
The morning trip is fun for bird watchers, nature lovers and those who enjoy tranquillity. Paddle at your own pace through this beautiful lagoon, observe the many animals that hide in the surrounding greenery and listen to nothing but the sound of the birds and waves in the background. The rest of the afternoon can be spent at the beach where you can snorkel in a natural pool or optionally visit the beautiful Buddhist temple Mulkirigala. This cave temple stands on top of a rocky mountain, it takes about 560 steps to the top. The view is amazing. In the late afternoon we travel to our hotel in Mirissa.
Day 8 Mirissa
There are several options you can choose from today; you can relax on the beach, go snorkelling or diving, or perhaps you want take an optional boat ride in search of whales, dolphins and sperm whales early in the morning, all options are possible, the choice is yours!
Day 9 Sinharaja rainforest – Mount Lavinia
Today we explore the last pristine rainforest in Sri Lanka on foot. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989. Here we find – besides the many jungle inhabitants – two beautiful waterfalls of 50 to 60 meters high. After our jungle tour we travel to Mont Lavinia. Here you can have a swim and enjoy the beach with the Colombo skyline in the background. In the evening you can have dinner in one of the many restaurants on this beach while you look at the most amazing sunset ever!
Day 10 Mount Lavinia – Colombo
Depending on your departure time and your preferences you can do some sightseeing or souvenir shopping on our last day. After an active trip, we return to Colombo from where you can catch a flight home or you can chose to extend your holiday at one of the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka or the Maldives.
